This guide lays out the requirements (mostly related to age) to run for different seats in Kentucky as well as the filing fee for each office.
State Lawmakers
KY State Representatives
There are 100 state representatives, and they work with the Kentucky Senate to create and modify Kentucky’s laws. At the beginning of each year, they meet in the state capitol for either 30 days or 60 days to pass laws and, in even years, pass the state budget. To be a candidate for a House seat you must be at least 24 years old, a citizen of Kentucky and you must have lived in the state for at least two years and in your district for one year prior to election. Representatives are elected for two-year terms, with the entire House elected every two years.
KY State Senators
There are 30 state senators, and they work with the Kentucky House to create and modify Kentucky’s laws. At the beginning of each year, they meet in the state capitol for either 30 days or 60 days to pass laws and, in even years, pass the state budget. To be a candidate for a state senate seat you must be at least 30 years old, a citizen of Kentucky, and must have lived in the state at least six years immediately preceding the election. A senator must live in the district for at least one year prior to election. Senators are elected for four-year terms, with half the Senate elected every two years. Even numbered districts are up for election in 2022. There are 36 state senators.
