The National Research Council estimates that the average immigrant pays
nearly $1,800 more in taxes than he or she "costs" in public benefits such
as education and healthcare. Yet, as the NRC study notes, this figure fails
to consider the contributions of an immigrant's U.S.-born children. When
both the public costs and tax contributions of an immigrant's children are
taken into account, the net fiscal contribution of the average immigrant is
$80,000.

Status and Trends in the Education of Hispanics
. Over one-half of Hispanic students speak English at home.
. Hispanic enrollment in colleges and universities increased between 1980
and 2000, though a smaller proportion of Hispanic complete college compared
to Whites and Blacks.
. In the 1999-2000 school year, the most popular fields of study in which
Hispanics earned bachelor's degrees were business, social sciences/history,
psychology and education.
. There is a positive relationship between education and salary for all
racial/ethnic groups, but the incomes of Hispanic men are lower than those
of White men at most educational levels.
. More than one-half of Hispanic immigrants never enrolled in a U.S. school,
but are included as high school dropouts if they did not complete high
school in their country of origin
. Latino students are more likely to drop-out due to financial burden, being
a first-generation immigrant, and lack of school preparation and support.
41.4% of undocumented Hispanic students drop-out of school.
