Re: Naturalization Oath
Resolved without litigation
The ACLU of Kentucky represented Tanja Medic, a Bosnian woman now living in Louisville, in her application to take an alternative naturalization oath. Ms. Medic was a permanent resident alien who met all requirements for United States citizenship. She needed only to take the naturalization oath, which requires new citizens to swear to bear arms on behalf of the United States. But because she is a conscientious objector, Ms. Medic could not agree to that requirement. Moreover, her conscientious objections did not derive from religious belief. Rather, she came to view war as immoral after growing up in the aftermath of World War II and witnessing the Bosnian War first hand. After a hearing at which we represented her, the government approved Ms. Medic's application, she took the alternative naturalization oath and she became a United States citizen.
